What Are Açaí Beads?
Açaí beads are natural seed beads made from the hard seeds of the açaí palm (Euterpe oleracea), a palm native to the Amazon region of South America. Best known for its deep purple fruit, the açaí palm also produces a remarkably hard seed that can be cleaned, dried, drilled, dyed, and transformed into a lightweight material for jewelry making and crafts. Unlike manufactured plastic or glass beads, every açaí bead begins as a real seed. Natural differences in size, shape, surface markings, and texture are expected and are part of their organic character.
From Açaí Fruit to Amazon Seed Beads
Inside each açaí fruit is a large, hard seed surrounded by a relatively thin layer of edible pulp. After the pulp is removed, the remaining seeds can be cleaned and dried for other uses—including beads and artisan crafts. Once prepared for jewelry making, the seeds are drilled and may be left in their natural state or dyed in an incredible range of colors.
