What Are Porcupine Quills?
Porcupine quills are specialized hairs that form part of a porcupine's natural defense. Contrary to a common myth, porcupines do not shoot their quills. Quills can detach when the animal comes into contact with a predator or other surface. The African porcupine quills in our collection are naturally patterned in shades of creamy white, tan, brown, and black. Their distinctive markings, tapered shapes, and lightweight structure make them fascinating natural materials for jewelry makers, artists, collectors, and mixed-media designers. Naturally Shed & Responsibly Gathered
Our African porcupine quills are naturally shed and gathered after they have been released by the animal. No animals are harmed to produce the quills we offer. And when we say natural, we really mean natural. Quills can arrive at our studio carrying dust, dirt, and debris from where they were gathered. Each batch is cleaned by hand, allowed to dry thoroughly, and then sorted into approximate size groups before being photographed and offered in the shop. We don't try to make them look factory-perfect. Slight curves, differences in thickness, variations in striping, and individual shapes are characteristics of a genuine natural material. That's part of what makes every handful of porcupine quills different from the next.

Not sure which size to choose? Different quill lengths lend themselves to very different designs. Tiny Quills | Approximately 2–4 inches A great choice for earrings, small jewelry components, detailed embellishments, miniature crafts, and projects where a lighter, more delicate quill is preferred.
